Metabolic Syndrome

What is it? Who gets it? What does it mean? What do you do about it, if anything?

First, it is a fairly new diagnosis, being initially described in 1998. Its main feature included insulin resistance, that is, the inability of the body to properly use insulin to control blood sugar. Hence, blood sugar would elevate. Sounds like diabetes, right? Indeed, but it also includes other markers as well. Currently these are:

     Fasting glucose levels greater than 110 (mg/dl)
     High blood pressure greater than 130/85 (mmHg)
     Triglyceride levels greater than 150 (mg/dL)
     HDL levels ("good cholesterol") less than 40 (mg/dL) in men
              and less than 50 (mg/dL) in women
     and too much abdominal fat - waist circumference greater than
              40 inches in men and 35 inches in women

Three or more of these five criteria qualify for the diagnosis of
Metabolic Syndrome.

Turns out it may affect one in every four adults in the US making it the number one public health problem in several Westernized nations. Besides having a huge impact on cardiac disease, it likely plays a role in many other diseases such as Polycystic Ovary Disease, Alzheimer's, gestational diabetes, and inflammatory disorders for starters.

Who gets it? Obviously those with the above criteria/components are likely to exhibit it; by definition, they "have" it.

Some things that put one at risk include high fructose corn syrup, simple sugars and other high glycemic index carbohydrates are the main culprits. Sorry for the cynicism, but, in short, the Standard American Diet (SAD) looks like a major player here.

So what do you do about it?

Excuse the "duh" moment, but primarily, avoid the SAD diet and so avoid the problem altogether. Eat healthy. Lots of veggies with appropriate for type amounts of "clean" (organic?) meat and flesh protein.

Come to think of it, that works for reversing the problem as well.

And here are some other specific actions if you or a loved one already have this syndrome:

     Besides the right kind of foods, eat the right amounts of food
          to reduce calories and induce weight loss
     Exercise. [You saw that coming, didn't you?] (See below)
     Lower inflammation in the body. Alpha-lipoic acid, EPA,
          antioxidants.
     Straighten out your biorhythm. Sleep during the right hours
          and for enough hours.
     Don't use weight loss supplements; use Hoodia gordonii
         (see N2V5 & 6 of this newsletter) and/or green tea instead

Bottom line: Insulin resistance, too much sugar in our system, is a major problem. Something we have known for years but now with documented connections to lots of other problems. Bad news is it is here. Good news is the basic, common sense, healthy living is the way to either prevent it or to return to health.

BRIEF FACTS AND TIPS

TV watching is the worst sedentary lifestyle activity going when compared to others such as reading, writing, sewing, board games and driving a car (not in NASCAR!). Another reason to throw the thing out - kids, of all ages, are gonna hate me! This puts one at increased risk for diabetes and obesity. This is from recent studies in JAMA, Obesity Research and others. The good news is that for every two hours of walking or other activity, obesity risk lowered by 9% and diabetes by 12%. Get walking (see N2V9 of this newsletter)!

Eating iron bound to meat proteins ("heme" iron) increases insulin resistance and diabetes in both men and women. At the same time iron in fruit, kelp, whole grains and brewer's yeast ("nonheme" iron) does not. Has to do with how availaable the heme iron is to the body and the fact that it is quickly stored in tissue. From there it may increase oxidation reactions that  cause aging and dis-ease. Again, the old tried and true wins out. Go heavy on the veggies and easy on the meats!

A small study recently reported that chromium (picolinate) at 1000mcg per day improved insulin sensitivity in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCSO). [Note connection between insulin resistance and PCSO above]. Not earth shattering perhaps, but if you suffer from this disorder every little bit helps.

Though not totally consistent for unknown reasons, it appears that cinammon helps lower fasting blood sugar, triglyceride and cholesterol levels in type 2 diabetics.

Hey, can't hurt. Give it a go.

Vitamin B12 helps reverse diabetic retinopathy in young type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetics. 100 mcg were given subcutaneously. This was done 50 years ago (and we are just hearing about it????) before the sublingual dots. Worth a try now to use the dots, otherwise you will need your doctor to do the injections.

A study from 1990 showed that evening primrose oil at the level of 360 mg per day improved neuropathy in diabetics. The active ingredient here is likely Gamma Linolenic Acid.
